Epic-PosterChris Wedge (Ice Age) returns behind the camera this year to bring us Epic, another highly anticipated animated blockbuster from Blue Sky Studios, whose credits include Ice Age, Robots, and Rio.

I’ve already seen more than enough to be convinced that Epic will be one of my favourite animated films of the year, and I’m really looking forward to its release.

The last trailer we saw was released way back in November, and with its May release date fast approaching, Fox have debuted a new UK trailer through Orange.

“EPIC is a 3D CG action-adventure comedy that reveals a hidden world unlike any other. From the creators of ICE AGE and RIO, EPIC tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good who keep the natural world alive and the forces of evil who wish to destroy it. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world… and ours.”

The studio have assembled another terrific voice cast for Epic, with Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz, Aziz Ansari, Josh Hutcherson, Jason Sudeikis, Pitbull, Steven Tyler, Blake Anderson, Judah Friedlander, and Beyoncé Knowles all lending their voices for the animated feature.

I’m a really big fan of Aziz Ansari and essentially everything he does, and it looks like he’s got a pretty prominent role here, which is awesome.

Wedge is making his third film as director, directing from a script by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember (Get Smart) and Daniel Shere, and it looks like he’s done another very impressive job.

Epic will be released in 3D two days earlier than expected in the UK on 22nd May, with its US release date set for 24th May. It will be opening on the same weekend as Fast and Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III, both of which are of course immensely anticipated films as well, and have the benefit of having a built-in audience as part of a franchise. But Epic will no doubt be courting the younger audience, and should hopefully have no problem finding it. Here’s the latest trailer to give you more than a few reasons why this is a must-see animated movie of the year.
