Elysium-Concept-ArtHeading to the multiplex across the US next weekend, Elysium marks the return of Neill Blomkamp following his outstanding debut with District 9 in 2009.

The sci-fi actioner has Matt Damon front and centre in the lead, with Sharlto Copley reuniting with Blomkamp having taken centre stage back on District 9.

With the film’s Stateside release just over a week away, Sony have released a new extended trailer. And some impressive new concept art and B-roll footage have surfaced online too, via io9 and CBM, respectively.

The impoverished inhabitants of a ruined planet Earth fight to join the safe and pristine living conditions of the space station Elysium, where only the wealthy and healthy reside. In need of medical treatment only available on Elysium, one resident of the planet’s slums attempts to reach the space station at any cost, and his actions could offset the entire balance of haves and have-nots.

Damon and Copley are joined by a great cast, led by Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Diego Luna, Alice Braga, and Faran Tahir.

Blomkamp is directing from his own script once more, with Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes) producing.

Elysium will hit regular and IMAX cinemas on August 9th in the US, and has thankfully been brought forward on our shores, with its new UK release date set for 21st August.
