In some extremely shocking news, it has been announced today that the director of The Cornetto Trilogy will no longer helm Ant-Man for Marvel Studios, a project that Edgar Wright has been attached to since 2006.
A joint statement was released today, and it reveals that Wright (who is no stranger to the comic book movie genre after Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) decided to part ways with Marvel due to “differences in their vision of the film”. After almost a decade of planning, it’s hard to imagine what that could be!
“Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.”
The British director walking away from Ant-Man clearly isn’t going to halt Marvel’s plan to release the movie next year, especially as a cast (which includes Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas) is already in place. The original plan was for Ant-Man to take place outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it has since been confirmed that there would have been at least some connective tissue.
Could it be that Marvel – who have a somewhat rocky history with a number of directors and actors – wanted to make too many alterations to Wright’s original vision which he first brought to them in 2006?
Wright has even shot test footage which has been shown off a number of times since, and while the statement claims that the split was “amicable”, it’s still extremely difficult to imagine what would cause him to not stick with the movie. Now we just have to wait and see who replaces him…
