Day of the Doctor

With the run-up to The 50th Anniversary Episode of Dr. Who on Saturday, The Day of the Doctor has been dominating our Twitter and Facebook timelines but it’s taken those clever people at PR agency Way to Blue some time to compile a list of all this data to reveal some rather interesting stats, not least that during it’s broadcast, the show received over 1 million Twitter mentions.

They’ve collated a list of all media mentions of the show across the biggest Social Media platforms used today and their findings are below including working out which moments in the show caused the biggest stir. They have worked out which of the Dr. Who actors had the most mentions, and which countries were most involved. If you missed our top ten wish list from the show click this way.

  • In the week leading up to the broadcast excitement built, with over 827K mentions
  • On Saturday the  show received over 1 million mentions worldwide
  • Saturday’s show drove five times more discussion than previous Dr Who episodes; such as
  • Last year’s Christmas special ‘The Snowman’ (239,396 mentions), ‘The Bells of Saint Joan’ (298,694) and the final episode of season 7 (244,394).
  • American’s are big on Who: with 38.8% of all conversation coming from the US. Followed by the UK with 29.2%
  • 55% of fans talking about Dr Who were female, dispelling the myth that the sci-fi drama is a boys only club.
  • The most engaged  tweet  about the programme was from the official 1Direction account http://twitter.com/onedirection/statuses/404361530310791169, followed by the single word ‘Geronimo’ from the official BBC Doctor Who account: http://twitter.com/bbcdoctorwho/statuses/404335662708441089 in third place was a single image of Peter Capaldi’s Eyes http://twitter.com/bbcdoctorwho/statuses/404385999284748288

Battle of The Doctors

  • As well as being the nation’s favourite Doctor Who, according to Radio Times readers, David Tennant was the internet’s favourite Doctor on Saturday night, gaining 46,202 mentions, beating Matt Smith by almost 6,253
  • Tom Baker’s brief cameo caused a social frenzy with over 35,076 comments, surprisingly beating John Hurt’s significant role by over 16,200 mentions.
  • Peter Capaldi’s appearance, which lasted seconds, drove the best return on engagement vs. airtime with 12,738 mentions.

When it comes to sentiment, all the Doctor’s scored well but Tom Baker stole the show with 81%

  • David Tenant- 78% positive
  • Matt Smith – 80% positive
  • Tom Baker – 81% Positive
  • John Hurt – 61% positive
  • Peter Calpaldi – 80% positive

The Battle of the Companions

  • Only two companions featured prominently in the episode, Clara and ‘Rose Tyler’ (or at least the essence of her character).
  • The re-emergence of Rose drove 19,273 comments. Meaning she even beat one of the time lords themselves, John Hurt in terms of volume of discussion.
  • In terms of sentiment, Clara was the winner with 80% vs. 73% for Rose
