riddler

A young Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle and Penguin will all have major roles in Fox’s upcoming Gotham pilot which focuses on a young Detective Jim Gordon and his partner Harvey Bullock, but now another iconic member of the Caped Crusader’s rogues gallery has been cast in the highly anticipated DC Comics series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, relative unknown Cory Michael Smith (his credits include Olive Kitteridge and Camp X-Ray) will play Edward Nygma, the man who later becomes The Riddler.

Younger versions of this particular character have been portrayed in numerous ways over the years, with the most recent making the unhinged Nygma an employee of Wayne Industries and one of Batman’s first foes.

However, Gotham will feature a Nygma who is a brilliant young forensic scientist working for Gotham PD and has a penchant for speaking in … rather cryptic language. Inquisitivea, eccentric and outgoing — yet socially awkward — he wants to be liked, but he doesn’t quite know how.

The last actor to play The Riddler was Jim Carrey in Batman Forever. Smith will be billed as a guest star in the pilot, with the option to have a recurring role in the series after that.

Gotham is shaping up to be very interesting indeed, wouldn’t you say?
