Clouds-of-Sils-Maria-Promo-Poster-sliceOriginally titled simply Sils Maria, Olivier Assayas’ upcoming drama recently underwent a slight title change to Clouds of Sils Maria, and now the first promo poster has been released, along with the first official synopsis.

Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz make for an impressive leading trio, and the synopsis below teases some interesting dynamics between them.

At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena.

She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself.

Lars Eidinger (Everyone Else), Johnny Flynn (Song One), and Brady Corbet (Melancholia) complete the cast.

Assayas (Something in the Air, Carlos the Jackal) directs from his own script, with Charles Gillibert (On the Road, Laurence Anyways), Karl Baumgartner (Le Havre), Thanassis Karathanos (Ajami), and Jean-Louis Porchet and Gérard Ruey (Les destinées) producing.

Moretz’s role particularly sounds like a promising part for the young actress to show off her many talents, teasing a kind of seductive, almost femme fatale-esque, allure in that description of being ‘ambiguously charming’.

Whilst little is revealed about Stewart’s role in the above synopsis, the fact that her name is billed second in the trio suggests that she’ll have a big part to play, too. The young actress is coming off strong praise for her performance in Camp X-Ray at Sundance, and with Clouds of Sils Maria and Tim Blake Nelson’s anticipated drama, Anesthesia, on her slate before the year’s end, it looks like she has another great year ahead of her.

No word yet on a release date, but given the terrific cast and subject matter, the drama seems like a perfect choice for Gillibert and his newly-minted CG Cinéma shingle to debut on the festival circuit later this year.
