During the 2014 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour, HBO have confirmed that Boardwalk Empire’s upcoming fifth season will be its last. While ratings for season 4 dipped slightly, the series (which won 13 Emmys during its first three years) still garnered plenty of critical acclaim, so the news that it is ending so soon has left fans of the 1920s set drama reeling.

“We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of ‘Boardwalk Empire,'” said creator/writer Terrence Winter in a statement released yesterday. “After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”

Boardwalk Empire chronicles the life of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (plated by Steve Buscemi) during prohibition in America, with the focus on Atlantic City as well as iconic real-life gangsters in New York and Chicago. With so many US TV shows cancelled without ever being given the chance for a proper resolution, it is a relief to know that Boardwalk Empire will go out in style.

In some slightly more positive news, HBO also confirmed the return of Game of Thrones on April 6th. The first official trailer for the highly anticipated fourth season will be released this Sunday before the debut of new drama, True Detective. Sky Atlantic have since confirmed that the series will air in the UK just a day later on April 7th at 9pm.
