Arrow

The CW has given early renewals to three of their biggest series’, as well as two of their newest. Arrow will return for a third year, Supernatural will be back for a tenth (a rare achievement), and The Vampire Diaries will get a sixth season. Reign and The Originals will also be back for second outings. Beauty & the Beast, The Carrie Diaries, Hart of Dixie and The Tomorrow People are all on the bubble, and we’ll likely hear more about those during the network’s Upfront presentation to advertisers in April.

Arrow is currently The CW’s most watched series, while The Vampire Diaries continues to be the network’s highest-rated show in all key demos. Supernatural meanwhile has amazingly managed to post double-digit increases year-to-year in total viewers and all key demos, recently logging its most watched episodes since 2010.

“This season we’ve had great success with our new hit series ‘The Originals’ paired with ‘Supernatural,’ giving us our best Tuesday nights in years. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is No. 2 in its time period in the young adult demos, and with ‘Arrow’ continuing to gain among young men, and ‘Reign’ growing its time period, we now have strong nights on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,” said The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz in a statement released today. “I’m very pleased to announce early pickups for all five series, and let our fans know they’ll have more great drama to look forward to next season.”

This should come as very welcome news to fans of these shows, especially as Arrow in particular is quickly establishing itself as the best comic book adaptation on the small screen. Supernatural meanwhile remains a cult favourite, and keeping Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki together when they have such great chemistry is far from a bad thing (even if both actors are equally deserving of more movie roles). The Vampire Diaries also seems to have plenty of life left in it as it enters its sixth year.
