So the time has finally come, and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is finally coming back to us. I know we are all waiting to catch up with the legendary Bluths to see what they’re up to these days. With the production photos rolling in (you can check some of them out right here), it’s certainly raising my excitement level to a fever pitch.
In honor of the show’s magnificent return, I thought it would be fun to imagine what some of our favorite actors could do in the world of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. Already there has been an awesome casting announcement with John Slattery taking on an unspecified role (yes that’s Mr. Roger Sterling himself of MAD MEN). So here’s a few folks I think could be outstanding additions to the cast.
5. IDRIS ELBA
If we’re going with outside-the-box choices, then Elba could make a brilliant addition to AD. Elba flexed his comedy muscle in the mainstream with a stint on the U.S. version of THE OFFICE, but has been making waves in dramatic fare starting with his juicy role as drug kingpin Stringer Bell on HBO’s THE WIRE, and his revelatory turn as the title character on BBC’s LUTHER.
I guess the idea behind this choice is more selfish because I feel like this guy can do anything. I think it would be fun to see Elba play one of the dim-witted characters in the AD world, maybe even filling the void that was left by Charlize Theron’s character Rita Leeds from season 3… It seems serendipitous since Theron and Elba co-starred in PROMETHEUS… It’s a reach, I know, but tell me I’m wrong!
4. CARRIE FISHER
I think Carrie Fisher is an international treasure. Since her iconic performance in the STAR WARS saga, Fisher has embraced her darker side. After penning her memoir, POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, Fisher was and still is regarded as one of the freshest comedic writers in the business. Over the years she has appeared in numerous comedies (including a fantastic guest-starring role on 30 ROCK) and seems like the go-to choice for the role of sardonic, middle-aged spinster (with all due respect of course).
I envision Fisher in a role similar to that of Lucille Bluth in terms of behavior and tone. Perhaps a Bluth aunt? Sister of Lucille? I feel like pairing Walter with Fisher could make for some truly entertaining stuff. Walter seems to generate chemistry easily with her co-stars (which is no small feat when we’re factoring in Liza Minelli), so the addition of Fisher would be truly marvelous.
