Review: Valentine’s Day

Review: Valentine’s Day

February 9, 2010 · Comments

As a 31 year-old singleton in London, I went to see Valentine’s Day with good intentions and was prepared to set aside my cynical views of love and romance (for one night anyway). I’d even go so far as to say that I was looking forward to a little bit of feel-good, lighthearted fun from one of the most anticipated movies this season. This was my date with Valentine’s and I wanted to give it a chance to woo me and win me over. I tried to open myself up to the idea that a movie dedicated to one of the most contrived non-holiday days of the year could still potentially deliver something... [Read the full story]

Teaser Trailer for Studio Ghibli’s The Borrowers

February 9, 2010 · Comments

Studio Ghibli has made a profound mark on the world of animation and are criminally under-appreciated here in the West, and as we’re always on the look out for our next Ghibli fix the brief Japanese teaser for Karigurashi no Arrietty, translated as The Borrower Arriety,  has arrived  and though it is a teaser in the strictest sense of the word, there’s enough gorgeous artwork to whet the appetite. Mary Norton’s series of books about a tiny family secreted beneath the floorboards, and who borrow things, have been adapted before as live action pieces and while this teaser gives... [Read the full story]

First Pic from Rourke and Fox’s Passion Play

February 9, 2010 · Comments

The first image to emerge from the Mickey Rourke/Megan Fox film Passion Play is here, and it looks as if the two are dancing on the set of The Wizard of Oz in this one. Megan Fox is a angel, trapped in a carnival sideshow while Rourke is a down and out trumpet player who saves Fox’s character from the oppressive hand of Happy Shannon, not the head clown in the circus, but a vicious gangster played by Bill Murray. Well, I was sold on Bill Murray but this looks to be a nicely low key tale of redemption and salvation (with Bill Murray). This is Mitch Glazer’s first film behind the camera... [Read the full story]

Mr & Mrs Smith Off to the Reboot Factory

Mr & Mrs Smith Off to the Reboot Factory

What made Doug Liman’s married hitman couple action comedy work was the chemistry of its stars (and the faint waft of scandal behind the scenes played its part too), the pyrotechnics of the gunplay combined nicely with the peppy dialogue and though there’s not much once the surface is scratched it was a...

24 The Movie Finally in Development

There’s been talk of a 24 movie for years and the closest it got was a 2 hour TV special where Jack Bauer ended up in Africa and was called 24: Redemption. Tom Ford’s feature debut is a triumph of style and substance, of ecstatic emotions and deadening grief which among its merits is the chance it gives for its lead, Colin Firth, to realise his potential as an actor with a performance worthy of the awards nominations it is receiving.
