Nicholas Sparks is by far one of the most adapted authors in the US, with more than half a dozen of his novels arriving on the big screen, most notably with the brilliant The Notebook, led by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.

The latest adaptation to get the big screen treatment is his 2010 novel, Safe Haven, and now the first trailer for the film has arrived, and looks like a solid romantic drama, led by Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and rising young star Julianne Hough (Footloose, Rock of Ages).

“SAFE HAVEN is an affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to love again, Safe Haven is based on the novel from Nicholas Sparks, the best-selling author behind the hit films The Notebook and Dear John. When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.”

Three-time Oscar nominee, Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) is behind the camera, directing from a script by Leslie Bohem (TV’s Taken) and Dana Stevens (City of Angels), with Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, The Avengers) and David Lyons (Grey’s Anatomy) completing the cast nicely.

And watching the trailer below, it looks like we’re going to have another nice scene in the rain.

Safe Haven will be tugging on the strings of your heart on 8th February, 2013 in the US. No word yet on a UK release, but Sparks’ adaptations have always had a theatrical release on our shores too, and I doubt this is going to be an exception. For now, here’s the first trailer, featuring a pretty great cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way, performed by Lissie. Enjoy.
