This is one for the rumour mill, but it will definitely make for an interesting discussion among fans in the days and weeks to come, until we hear confirmation one way or another.

The Daily Mail are reporting that Emily Blunt (Looper) and Ruth Wilson (Luther) are currently vying for the role of Ms. Marvel in the upcoming The Avengers 2, the sequel to this year’s immense superhero blockbuster from writer-director Joss Whedon.

Until now, there’s been no word of Ms. Marvel’s involvement in the sequel, which is precisely why this is one for the rumour mill, at least for the time being.

Blunt is currently in cinemas alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis in Rian Johnson’s Looper, which has been earning universal critical acclaim in recent weeks, as well as doing fantastically at the box office last weekend in its first three days. She’ll next be seen in Dante Ariola’s Arthur Newman opposite Colin Firth, and is currently filming Doug Liman’s All You Need Is Kill, as the female lead opposite Tom Cruise.

Wilson, best known for her starring role in Luther, was most recently seen alongside Keira Knightley in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, and is part of the impressive casts for Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger and John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks, and her recognition is naturally thus looking to be on the rise.

According to the Daily Mail,

“British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood.

Emily, 29, below, star of The  Young Victoria, and Ruth, 30, from TV’s Luther, are both  hotly tipped to play superhero Ms Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble, one of the biggest box office hits of all time.”

The original line-up are all expected to reprise their roles from this year’s blockbuster, so we should be looking forward to seeing Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner, and Blunt or Wilson would certainly make for an interesting addition to the already amazing roster in the role of Ms. Marvel.

Via Wikipedia,

“Ms. Marvel initially possessed superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, flight, physical durability, a limited precognitive “sixth sense”, and a perfectly amalgamated human/Kree physiology that rendered her resistant to most toxins and poisons, with the added effect of making her body virtually invulnerable and indestructible.”

Though it would definitely be interesting to see one of these actresses take on such a role in the upcoming sequel, it ought to be taken with more than a pinch of salt for the time being, until we hear otherwise. But it is nonetheless an intriguing possibility to entertain.

All we really know of The Avengers 2 is this: Joss Whedon will once more be writing and directing it, and it’s going to be incredible. And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s also writing and potentially directing the pilot for an upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. With a bit of luck, we’ll have something concrete to add to that soon.

The Avengers 2 is set to be released on 1st May, 2015. Before then, we have Iron Man 3 to look forward to in April/May 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World in November 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy in August 2014. And depending on how lucky we are, we might get Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man film somewhere between Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, but naturally that remains to be seen.

We’re also expecting the first teaser trailer for Iron Man 3 to land very soon, on 23rd October, so be sure to check back for that. More as we get it.
