Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother, Happythankyoumoreplease) returned to Sundance for his sophomore effort behind the camera this year, Liberal Arts.
As expected, the film was wonderfully received, and so much so that it came to Sundance London in April, which is where I saw and fell in love with it. (And I can’t wait to see it again.)
Radnor stars in the lead opposite the rising young star, Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), and after the first trailer landed last month, Revolver Entertainment have put out a new UK trailer ahead of its release here next month.
“Newly single, 35, and uninspired by his job, Jesse Fisher worries that his best days are behind him. But no matter how much he buries his head in a book, life keeps pulling Jesse back. When his favourite college professor invites him to campus to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse jumps at the chance. He is prepared for the nostalgia of the dining halls and dorm rooms, the parties and poetry seminars; what he doesn’t see coming is Zibby – a beautiful, precocious, classical-music-loving sophomore. Zibby awakens scary, exciting, long-dormant feelings of possibility and connection that Jesse thought he had buried forever.”
The multi-hyphenate Radnor is directing from his own script, and has assembled a brilliant supporting cast to star alongside him and Olsen, headed up by Richard Jenkins, Allison Janney, Elizabeth Reaser, and Zac Efron, as part of an increasingly diverse trend in his film selections.
Liberal Arts will be released in the US on 14th September, before coming to UK cinemas on 5th October, a date I have very much committed to memory. I loved it at Sundance London, and have been eagerly anticipating its return ever since; it’s by far one of my favourite films of the year.
