Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is currently the highest-grossing film of the year, the third-highest-grossing film of all time, and one of the most amazing films ever made.

Having broken record upon record when it first came out back in April/May (depending on where in the world you’re reading this from – August, for example, if you’re in Japan), the film’s official Facebook has announced that it will be returning to cinemas for a week-long engagement this coming Labor Day weekend in the US.

Whedon has already been given the job of writing and directing The Avengers 2, putting him in an incredibly influential position in crafting the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and not only that, but we heard news this week that ABC have officially ordered a pilot for a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, which Whedon is set to write, and intends to direct, schedule permitting.

The original film, The Avengers, will be released on Blu-ray/DVD just around the corner, coming on 25th September in the States (and 17th September here in the UK), and we’ve already been treated to some of the brilliant special features coming our way shortly – most recently with the alternate opening scene, exclusive to Blu-ray.

But we all know that there’s nothing quite like the experience of sitting in a darkened auditorium with one of our favourite films projected on an enormous screen before our eyes – that’s the way film is best enjoyed, and that’s certainly the way a fantastic blockbuster like The Avengers is best enjoyed.

So if your agenda is looking a little light this weekend, if you’re reading this in America, and/or you’ve not got anything planned one day/night next week, make sure you head to your local theatres once more to catch this on the big screen, as it deserves to be seen. It may well be your last chance to do so for a while to come (unless you happen to live in a big city, which might just screen Marvel’s Phase One films in the run-up to Iron Man 3 next spring).

Whedon, as you all no doubt already know, directed the film from his own script, bringing together all of our favourite cast from the previous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as giving us a few excellent additions (one of which I won’t mention, in case you haven’t seen the film already). Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, and Samuel L. Jackson lead the cast, with Gwyneth Paltrow returning once more as Pepper Potts, alongside Paul Bettany as the voice of JARVIS.

The Avengers is set to return to cinemas tomorrow on Friday, 31st August, and will continue its run through until 6th September, giving you plenty of time to get at least one more viewing in on the big screen. On the off chance you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the trailer for one of the greatest films of all time. Enjoy.
