Also screened at the convention was an awesome new red-band clip from the film, and now Lionsgate have released it online for those of us not currently in San Diego.
Karl Urban (Star Trek) stars as the eponymous Judge Dredd, with Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Jason Cope, and Domhnall Gleeson starring alongside him.
“DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.”
Pete Travis (Vantage Point) is behind the camera, directing from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), adapting the original 2000 AD character for the big screen, entirely separate to the 1995 film version with Stallone.
Dredd will be released in 3D on 7th September here in the UK, followed by 21st September in the US. There’s already been early talk of the possibility of a trilogy, with $50m. at theUS box office being the number necessary to make the first sequel – so if you want to see more Dredd, make sure you see this on the big screen. It looks awesome.
