Guillermo del Toro’s return behind the camera with Pacific Rim is definitely one of the most highly-anticipated sci-fi films of next year, with del Toro directing his first film since 2008’s Hellboy II.

Starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, the film is set in the year 2025, and is one of many films heading to Comic-Con this month, so hopefully we’ll have more to bring you soon.

Ahead of that, EW have put out the first look at Hunnam and Kikuchi looking pretty damn awesome in their futuristic gear.

“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”

Del Toro is directing from a script by Travis Beachem, with Clifton Collins, Jr., Max Martini, and Robert Kazinsky filling out the supporting cast. I’m intrigued by Charlie Day’s casting, given his background is heavily steeped in comedy – rather looking forward to seeing him in this sci-fi epic.

Pacific Rim is set for release on 12th July, 2013 in the UK and US, and it wouldn’t be out of the question to imagine it will be coming to IMAX theatres, too. As usual with the image below, you can click to enlarge.
