Keira Knightley returns to work with Joe Wright (Atonement) once more for Anna Karenina, the big-screen adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel.

We’ve been seeing a handful of pictures in recent months, all of which have looked lovely, and now the first poster has debuted online, giving us a look at Knightley front and centre with Aaron Johnson, surrounded by Jude Law, Alicia Vikander, and Domhnall Gleeson.

“The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with director Joe Wright, following the award-winning box office successes “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement,” is the epic love story “Anna Karenina,” adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (“Shakespeare in Love”). The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.”

Oscar-winning writer Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) is behind the script, which sounds perfect to me, with Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Emily Watson, and Olivia Williams supporting.

It’s early days yet, but judging by all we’ve seen so far, I’d imagine an Oscar nomination or two would certainly not be out of the picture – I’m thinking, Best Costume Design, and quite possibly Best Adapted Screenplay.

Anna Karenina will be released in the UK on 7th September, and will arrive in the US a little later for a limited release on 9th November – the later release there potentially suggesting Focus Features will look to give it an awards campaign. Here’s the new poster to give you a taste of what we have to look forward to: something beautiful.
