The Great GatsbyThe first trailer and promo poster for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby set the Internet alight when it landed last month; we all knew it would be beautiful – it’s a Luhrmann film, after all – but that first good look at the film was even better than expected.

We’ve seen a handful of images before and since, and now three more images of the main players in Leonardo DiCaprio’s eponymous Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan’s Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire’s Nick Carraway have made their way online.

“From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker will create his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. “The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.”

Luhrmann directs from a script he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet), and alongside DiCaprio, Mulligan, and Maguire, we can look forward to seeing a fine supporting cast in Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke (who looked intense in the trailer), Elizabeth Debicki, and Amitabh Bachchan.

For those interested, the final image appears to be taken shortly after the first look we had of Bachchan alongside DiCaprio and Maguire, having been served at ‘The Angry Diamond’ – a nice little reference to an irate wife in the third chapter of Fitzgerald’s original novel. I wouldn’t be surprised if the film was littered with all kinds of these subtle references.

“… at intervals she appeared suddenly at his side like an angry diamond, and hissed: “You promised!” into his ear.”

The Great Gatsby will be released in 3D on Christmas Day in the US, following a day later in the UK for a Boxing Day release on 26th December. As you can imagine, there’s going to be significant awards buzz surrounding the film over the coming months, so be sure to set the date to memory, because this is promising to be one of the best films of the year. As usual with these new images, you can click to enlarge.
