Jason Statham returns with his usual great blend of action-thriller in Safe, due out in UK cinemas this weekend.

Statham has been brilliant in turning his tough-guy image into a career built on no-nonsense characters who do whatever they have to to get the job done, and it looks like Safe will be another in that vein.

A new action-packed clip has surfaced online, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, to give you an idea of what to expect.

“A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change… until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed.

But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl, Mei, being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action?and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a “counter.” He discovers she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for.

Realizing he’s the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city’s brutal underworld to save an innocent girl’s life… and perhaps even redeem his own.”

Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans, Prince of Persia) has directed from his own script, with a supporting cast including Catherine Chan as the young Mei, Robert John Burke, James Hong, Anson Mount, and Chris Sarandon.

Safe has just been released in the UK this past Friday, and is coming to the UK on Friday this week, 4th May. That date sees it going up against a slew of new films, including American Reunion and Zac Efron-starrer The Lucky One (both on 2nd May), as well as Beauty and the Beast 3D, Elizabeth Olsen-starrer Silent House, and Takashi Miike’s Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai on the same day. It’s going to be an interesting box office weekend for sure, with a host of great new films (and one old one) to choose from.

Since graduating, I spend as much time as possible watching films/TV shows, reading books, and listening to music. So getting to write about what I love is nothing short of awesome. Biggest film-related hope for 2014/ever: Guy Ritchie announcing the RocknRolla sequel is finally moving forward.
