For those of you patiently awaiting the return of Paul Thomas Anderson since 2007’s There Will Be Blood, it looks like we may now have an idea of when that wait will be over.

Megan Ellison, whose Annapurna Pictures has financed the upcoming PTA movie, tentatively titled The Master, tweeted the following to Cigarettes and Red Vines, a prominent PTA fan-site regarding the film’s possible release:

@cigsandredvines I know you guys are waiting on a release date for ‘the Master’, and it’s still a bit early, but I’d keep my eyes on October”

So whilst nothing’s official yet – including the title – Ellison being heavily involved the project, having brought it back from the dead and financing it through her banner, would certainly suggest that she’s got a good idea about what she’s talking about.

“Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (the acclaimed director of, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights), this story stars Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line). Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. A truly one-of-a-kind drama, which promises magnetic virtuoso performances, the film marks the fifth collaboration between Anderson and Hoffman, following Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love.”

Of course, October puts it in prime position for a stab at the awards season, and Anderson’s five-time Oscar-nominee track record would definitely be a strong indication of how much of a contender he has the potential to be early next year at the 85th Academy Awards.

Often, we’ve seen Oscar contenders get a later release here in the UK compared to their release in the US, but here’s to hoping that we’ll be getting this at the same time as America, because I can’t wait to see how it’s turned out.

Written and directed by Anderson, the cast includes the likes of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky, with music coming from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, We Need to Talk About Kevin), so you can imagine why there’s a high level of anticipation surrounding this project, not least because it’s been in the works for some time and came close to not getting made at all.

October definitely can’t come fast enough.
