Six Of The Best – American Football Films

6. Honourable Mention – Wildcats!

Yes, it was a really long time ago and no, it is not a genuinely “great” film, but for those who remember it (I had it on video and must have watched it a dozen times in my teens) it holds a strong palce in the affections.

It stars Goldie Hawn (back when she had a film career) and Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson (back before they did) and tells the heart-warming tale of a diminutive track coach who takes over the running of an American Football team, despite opposition, sniggers and nay-sayers. It’s got Bruce McGill and Mykel T Williamson in it as well and is great value for some innocent and hearty laughs.

It’s one of those films where five minutes in you can see exactly where it’s going, but you still enjoy it getting there. No doubt if I watched it now through supposedly more sophisticated eyes I would find all manner of fault with it, but I enjoyed it then and maybe it is best left as a treasured memory.

With thanks to Kenji for his invaluable contribution re: Remember The Titans.

About Dave Roper

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days.

Good list, but I would expect Any Given Sunday to be at 2, and what about Grid Iron Gang? Such a great film, even with Dwayne Johnson!

And please stop trying to get extra page views by doing one on each page :( #usabilityfail

I would take out “The Last Boyscout” and include “The Program” instead.  It was an excellent movie that highlighted the ups and downs of the college ball recruitment process.  I would also give honorable mention to “The Blind Side” rather than “Wildcats”.  For starters, it was a true story and it was also a much better movie.

Now I know it is a softer film at so many levels, but where is Blind Side in your list? Actually based on a true life so for me well worth an entry in the list and some fabulaous smile inducing moments. AND Sanrda Bullock.
