Despite under-performing Box Office results, Sony Pictures has announced that they will going forward with David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo sequels, the final two films in an English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, reported Deadline this week.
Many believed that Sony Pictures and Studio chief Amy Pascal et al would not go forward with the second and third novel adaptations, after the first film’s Box Office release fell significantly behind Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, only opening in 3rd place in the UK. These top two films, however, are PG films so it was never a good comparison. I happened to really enjoy the film, and it would be ridiculous if they didn’t carry on with the franchise.
Fortunately, it has now been announced that The Girl Who Played With Fire has already been written by Steve Zaillian, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest, which will also being written by Zaillian, is currently being penned.
Pascal and producer Scott Rudin have not yet confirmed David Fincher as the second two film’s director, but they are looking to start shooting The Girl Who Played With Fire by the end of this year/the beginning of next.
The film, which was released in the UK on 26th December 2011, still has most of its release dates ahead of it, and it has been holding better than any other holiday film. It is thought the film didn’t do so well because it featured some really quite disturbing scenes that weren’t fitting with its Christmas release.
Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has currently reached a $76.8M domestic cume, so reaching $100M doesn’t seem like it will be hard to achieve. At least we have some good news either way.
