It can be sorely tempting to go for something thoroughly avant-garde or unconventional, in an effort to establish my credentials as a serious film journalist and to show I’ve really got my finger on the pulse.
No doubt 2012 will throw up all manner of non-mainstream efforts that will be engaging, compelling, independently minded and praise-worthy, but I cannot pretend that I am anticipating them as eagerly as I am the summer superhero triple whammy. Since I was in primary school my greatest cinematic joy has been comic book heroes and the summer of 2012 brings us a rare feast. Yes, The Dark Knight Rises is an obvious choice given the critical and commercial success of Nolan’s Bat-films, yes The Avengers may prove to be overblown nonsense and yes, The Amazing Spider-Man‘s POV shots may leave the film feeling like even more of a computer game than usual, but at the moment, I don’t care. I’m excited about all three and unless, or until those expectations are demolished by shambolic end products, my enthusiasm abides.
These films belong on the big screen, show consistent commitment to large-scale set pieces and between them involve some of my favourite film characters. Bring it.
