Quite how David Fincher plucked and gothed Rooney Mara into the terrifying Lisbeth Salander is anybody’s guess, but the actress is has stepped into one hell of a role with Noomi Rapace already catapulted to crazy fame with her portrayal of the character in the Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.

Putting a director of Fincher’s stature in charge of a seemingly needless adaptation went a long way to convincing people that this was a good idea and the kick arse trailer we saw recently only compounded this.

The cast is full of accomplished actors and there’s no doubting that the novels could well be described in blurbs everywhere as ‘a sensation’ so it seem entirely appropriate that a cast and crew of this calibre is bringing them to a big screen, and in English, near you.

These three new pics give us a first look at Yorick van Wageningen as Nils Bjurman, Salander’s new guardian, and one whose relationship with the titular tattooed girl is all manner of nasty. I’m still working through the first book and have reached a very uncomfortable moment between the two. Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer are glimpsed below also.

Boxing Day is the UK release date and a better present I cannot imagine.
