Each week we’ll be showcasing some of most anticipated foreign releases as well as highlighting a few hidden gems which may have fallen off your radar. It’s no surprise that Hollywood has turned to World Cinema for inspiration in recent years with the number of remakes getting more and more popular.

Whilst it remains to be seen how many of these remakes go on to succeed or stay true to their original story counterparts, we decided it was high-time we turned the spotlight onto the next wave of foreign films to grace our screens.

José e Pilar (José & Pilar)

UK Cinema Release Date: Tuesday 22nd March 2011

Synopsis: City of God director Fernando Meirelles described this documentary as ‘a truth rare in cinema’, and it’s easy to see why. Miguel Gonçalves Mendes followed José Saramago and his wife Pilar del Rio over a four-year period, and the film film gives an intimate portrayal of an author during the creative process and of the relationship of a couple dedicated to changing the world, or at least trying to make it a better place. José and Pilar shows us the unseen Saramago.


My Perestroika

UK Cinema Release Date: Wednesday 23rd March 2011

Synopsis: ‘My Perestroika’ tells the story of five people from the last generation of Soviet children who were brought up behind the Iron Curtain. Just coming of age when the USSR collapsed, they witnessed the world of their childhood crumble and change beyond recognition. Through the lives of these former schoolmates, this intimate film reveals how they have adjusted to their post-Soviet reality in today’s Moscow.

Summer Wars (Samâ wôzu)

UK Cinema Release Date: Sunday 27th March 2011

Synopsis: Kenji Koiso, an eleventh grade math genius, agrees to take a summer job at the Nagano hometown of his crush, Natuski. When he arrives, he finds that her family have reunited to celebrate the 90th birthday of the family matriarch. His job is to pretend to be Natsuki’s fiancé. Meanwhile, his attempt to solve a mathematical equation causes a parallel world’s collision with earth.
