Despite being critically mauled upon its 2009 release, Platinum Dunes’ Friday the 13th reboot was a financial success. Despite previous reports that the sequel was officially dead, it has pulled a Jason Voorhees and returned with a vengeance (via First Showing).

Having originally announced the cessation of the franchise over twitter, Brad Fuller (aka @bcfuller) has only recently started tweeting again from his account regarding the film’s status. Announcing that a script has been written, it appears that the sequel is just waiting on a green light from the studio. The ‘original’ having earned over $91 million worldwide (on a $19 million budget), it is hard o believe the studio will need much convincing.

“[Damian] Shannon and [Mark] Swift wrote a great script. We are ready to go, when New Line is ready. But as of yet, they are not ready.”

While the remake was by no means celebrated, it was considerably less heathen than Platinum Dune’s neutering of The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Although it had more beginnings than Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King had endings, the film was no better or worse than most other entries in the slasher series. With a running Jason proving particularly effective, it’s possible that even Platinum Dunes might manage an above average sequel.
