Becket is a depiction of the conflict between Thomas Becket and KingHenry II of England leading to Becket’s murder in 1170.

Monahan will base his film on the text of the original 1959 play.

Smuggler Films will produce, with filming expected to commence early next year in the UK.

Monahan’s directorial debut, London Boulevard, starring Keira Knightley, Colin Farrell and Ray Winstone, opens in the UK on November 26.
