Leaping fresh faced from another critical hammering M. Night Shyamalan continues undaunted to his next project, which we’ve heard will be a sci-fi project called One Thousand A.E.

And there’s even better news – the film is being set up with Will Smith’s production company with Jaden Smith lined up for a leading role. Smith’s last foray into sci-fi was the woeful remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still but the recently released Karate Kid showed he was capable of better things and Shyamalan did wonders with Hayley Joel Osment back in the days of The Sixth Sense so my optimistic side is warming to this news.

THR reported the story, and though no actual plot details are forthcoming (even the A.E. isn’t explained – Bleeding Cool quite rightly suggested After Earth, but it could as easily be Alter Ego, who knows?). One man who does know is The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, who wrote this script for this one, and fans of Shyamalan the scribe might be disappointed to know that as well as farming out his brainchildren to other directors with The Night Chronicles, he is now picking up scripts from other writers.
