Xavier Dolan, a 21 year old actor-director who has already premiered two features at Cannes, has announced the film Laurence Always as his next project.

The former child star’s first feature, J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), has been sold to over 20 territories, while his second, Les Amours Imaginaires (Heartbeats) earned a standing ovation at Cannes. Having financed his previous efforts himself, it looks as though the young director will be receiving assistance from France after he was unable to draw funding from Canadian agencies. Budgeted at .5 million, Dolan has also resorted to crowdsourcing for additional sums.

Set in 1989, the film will follow 30 year old Laurence Alia as he reveals a secret desire to his long-term girlfriend. Lawrence, you see, wants to be a woman.

The cast, which includes past collaborators Monia Chokri (Heartbeats) and Suzanne Clement (I Killed My Mother), will not accommodate Dolan, who has decided remain firmly behind the camera for this – apparently content voicing Stan for French-dubbed South Park.
