Following his turn as one of The Losers for Sylvain White earlier this year and with a role as Heimdall in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor it may be time for Idris Elba to lead his own comic book movie and Total Film believe they have the answer from the man himself.

Speaking to Elba recently TotalFilm asked the actor about his plans post Thor, and his responses were guarded but revealing,

I have a picture deal with them (Marvel). I can’t tell you much about that, but I can tell you I’ll be back.

I wouldn’t mind having a crack at bringing Blade back, personally… But erm, there’s a couple of things there that they have… Luke Cage is… very interesting.

Those unfamiliar with Cage as a character can check out his page on the Marvel Wiki, and Wesley Snipes gave life to the recent big screen adaptation of Blade.

Perhaps the Luke Cage film is one of the (relatively) lower budget productions Marvel has been talking about, and earlier this year The L.A. Times talked up the project naming John Singleton as director and Tyrese Gibson in the main role and the ever reliable IMDb having the two still attached to the project. Singleton was quoted in 2007 talking about the movie,

There is a race to see if I’m going to do ‘Luke Cage’ first or ‘Black Panther’. I really wanted to do both of those pictures. I’ve always been a fan of Marvel comics, so it depends. I can do ‘Cage’ or ‘Black Panther’. I’ve just been approached about doing ‘Black Panther’.

Hollywood has a very limiting view on what makes a pop culture picture. If you put a black face on it, they think it’s black thing; but yet we have all these movies that have come up and whenever they any black people in it, they make all this money. That’s the thing that’s holding ‘Luke Cage’ up. They think it’s a small superhero movie. It’s not going to be a small stupid movie like ‘Meteor Man’. I’m trying to make ‘Luke Cage’.

Elba is a strong screen presence familiar with the Marvel world, and there’s enough in the character of Cage to make this one worth watching, if Elba’s deal is indeed for this project.
