Like many others I was hugely impressed with Carey Mulligan in An Education, and her roster of forthcoming films is looking pretty good with prominent roles in Mark Romanek’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go and Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, both out this year.
Now there’s a new film on that list, and it means Mulligan will be stepping into the shoes of an iconic actress in one of her defining roles.
The BBC spoke to the film’s writer Emma Thompson and it was confirmed that Carey Mulligan is set to play Eliza Doolittle in a remake of the 1964 film version of the Broadway musical My Fair Lady.
Thompson, Mulligan’s co-star in An Education, had this to say on the film’s two leading roles,
I think Carey is set to play it, yes. But we still don’t know about [Henry] Higgins. I love Hugh [Grant] so I’d love him to do it, he might want to, he might not want to, so we don’t know yet. But hopefully we’ll make it later this year.
While this it is a tall order to best the George Cukor film, especially considering how famously Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn embodied their roles, casting Mulligan is a smart move on director John Madden’s part as the world is watching her every move.
