I agree with everything you wrote in the first half of the article — the basic ideas about the character and the movie, especially your advocation of cribbing from Man of Steel (my favorite Superman origin, better than Birthright or the godawful atrocity that was Secret Origin), making Superman edgier and more down-to-earth without making him dark, the choice of villain, and the idea of Lex and Clark being old friends (which I'm iffy on for the comics, but would be brilliant for a movie adaptation).

However, I disagreed with a lot of your specifics addressed later in the article. Especially, I disagree with a small point you make: Lois falling in love with him only after finding out he's Superman. That's a terrible idea. Lois has long been a favorite character of mine, but the pre-Crisis "she's in love with Superman and ignores Clark" schtick makes her seem shallow, stereotypical, fangirly, and misogynistic. Strong women like the Post-Crisis Lois don't moon after mysterious, godlike superheroes. They fall for good men who truly love and appreciate them. And since Clark is the "real" or "original" identity, it only makes sense that Ms. Right would fall for him, not his heroic alter-ego.

Remember how in the first Spider-Man movie Mary Jane realized at the end that she loved Peter, not Spider-Man? That was a good moment. It confirmed that she wasn't just some silly girl with a crush who was attracted to power. That's one of my favorite things about post-Crisis continuity: that Lois fell in love with Clark long before ever finding out he was Supes.

I like your idea of Lois figuring it out rather than being shocked by Clark, (and possibly, getting temporarily pissed off at him for giving her the run-around, which would be a nice way of showing how even Supes isn't 100% purely, detachedly ethical) but only if it's after she falls for plain old Clark first.

"Clark can no longer be an idiotic, nervous, clumsy geek like in previous movies. It just doesn’t work anymore. Its not realistic and its nothing like the comic book either."

Of course it's realistic. Think Bill Gates. Mike Huckabee. Shepard Smith. Robert Gibbs - the list goes on and on. There are plenty of geeky, awkward, clumsy people who are nevertheless very successful in the real world.

And please, keep every colour where it has to be. I think that Superman's suit has to be as simple as in the comic. Remember his mommy made it and I don't think she is rich enough to use ultra-high-tech materials as in Superman returns with a plastic S. Remember Lois & Clark pilot episode? That was awesome. And of course, you're right, bigger S in front and golden in his back.
P.S.: Absolutely awesome too your idea of Doomsday and Reign Of The Supermen. Incredible...You're really great, man!

Yes to everythinb except one thing...John Williams's soundtrack is and will be forever Superman. It's the only thing that connects ALL Superman fans from ALL the decades. When you think of Superman with your eyes closed, you see red, blue, yellow and sing:DA-DA-DAA,DA-DA-DA-DA-DAAA.Then you believe a man can fly

I think you are right on every level, your chosie for Losi (Anne Hataway) 5 Star Pick Tom Welling should get the part for Superman Because as you said he nows Clark inside out (needs to be beefed up a tad), I can see the two actors love story realationship already But can I suggest a New character lets say UHMM A baby named Superboy so after the trilogy younger fans can get some Teen Action Via Teen Titan. Futher more I do suggest that the superman film aleast one of them gets alittle dark and poetic not so much The dark night but how about like you said before the and ressurection of Superman Let us see how he's broght back by his kandorin powers and not just poof he's back let us see the dark path he goes through to acheive his second life, but before that let us now the dark creature known as DOOMSDAY and his wicked birth or atleast throw a 45 min tv spot about the creature like they did for FAST and Furious movie. And last but not least IF not asking for to much, find some way to hook all Heros Or aleast Bruce Wayne /Batman in the last movie He is after all SUPERMAN best friend

Very nice piece, with some real thought and well worked-out ideas. Even for a Smallville hater like me, the writer raises a very good point about positioning Superman in a modern context.

I actually like Durance as Lois, and if you have Welling as Superman it would make a lot of sense. But its unlikely. They will want bankable names in key roles. One of the best things about the first Superman and the new Batman films is having big actors play key supporting roles (ie: Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Maggie Gyllenhall - who would make a great Lois as well come to think of it). Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Clarks' parents (if they are in it) all need to be played by big/well known actors, especially if the actor playing Supes is an unknown.

Aindreas,
Tom Welling I think is the only suitable guy out there right now. I'm not actually saying I'd necessarily pick him - but at the moment he's the only choice and to my mind he's played the character very well so far. If someone else comes along who is perfect for the part, so be it. But there's no obvious name who springs to mind right now. Yet again, they may have to go for an unknown (like Reeve and Routh).

Darren,
(Just in case my name doesn't give it away, I'm the author)

I'm not saying we have Luthor as the main villain, or a villain at all, but as a charachter who's part of the Superman's world, like a subplot behind the main story (they could make it so somehow Brainiac uses Lex Luthor or his technology or something like that). He's more of a supporting character in that sense, but he still is important.

Not as the main villain though, I totally agree. That has been done to death

Great article, but I just have to say, enough Lex Luthor. Any reboot of Superman has to be done without Luthor. He's been done to death and no matter how improved they make him, he's still just a man who never convinces anyone he's truly a threat to Superman. If the reboot features Luthor as the villain again I guarantee I'll wait for DVD. It would be just as boring as if they were to do the origin story all over again too. I'm hoping for a super villain in the reboot, like Bizaroo Superman!

i like the idea of going primarily clark, ala peter parker. that makes sense: that's, in a human way, how you get to go gritty. and he might actually get to go woodward a bit, (particularly if lex is a semi-hidden vilian) with judicious use of superpowers which would be refreshing, as clarke has never been anything other than a bumbling tool in the movies. but tom welling? what? are you mental?

I like this idea of Superman, with only a couple different ideas. While a younger Luthor would work very well, I love the idea of Sir Ben Kinglsey playing the role. I don't like the idea of an existing relationship between Clark and Lex. I think it is important to have Clark and Lex "worlds apart". I really like not having Lex as the main villain, but we, as the audience, should be privy to his illegal activities. I would have him a CEO, one that is underscrutiny because of "bonuses" and financial practices. But he should be smart enough to get around all investigations and speculations, so there is never a clear idea of him being corrupt.

My main concern with this article however is that it talks of Superman as a stand alone movie/trilogy with no mention of a Justice League tie in. Honestly, I don't want a JL movie. I don't think the heroes of DC make sense forming a team of super heroes that have a HQ, and work together continuously. However, WB see's $$, and a JL movie would indeed rake in the cash. WB is going to do everything they can in order to get a JL movie made. The best way to do it however, is not by "forming a tream" ala Marvel and it's Avengers, but by a villain that is so powerful that one Hero on his/her own is unable to defeat. So, basically a one shot story were heroes from around the globe join together to win, and then go their separate ways at the end. Done right, it could be huge. done wrong it could be a disaster, an extremely profitable disaster, but a disaster none the less.
