When news came out that The Karate Kid was going to be remade, the movie blogging world shuddered at the thought. We retracted our worries slightly when the first trailer was released late last year and today, we have the new theatrical trailer (embedded below) and I have to say it looks pretty good.

The remake stars Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s son) as Dre, a young boy who moves to live in China with his mother. It doesn’t take long before he finds himself being bullied. During a routine beating session, someone comes to his aid…. No, not Mr. Miyagi but Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan. Han then teaches Dre the art of Kung Fu and how to defend himself.

In this trailer alone, there seems to be a lot of nods to the original classic movie which I must have seen a hundred times. Instead of ‘wax on, wax off’ or ‘sand the floor’ they have ‘take off your coat, put on your coat’. I’m not sure it’s going to catch on quite as well but it was a nod none the less. Also at the end of the trailer, you hear the music playing on the radio, ‘You’re the Best Around’ which was the soundtrack from the original. And lastly the awesome scene where Daniel Son catches a fly with chop-sticks to the anoyance of Mr. Miyagi who puts it down to “Beginner Luck”, and in the new version, Mr. Han smashes it with a fly swat…. Again, made me laugh!!

The Karate Kid has a release date of 16th July and I’m now actually looking forward to seeing it. This new trailer looks beautifully shot by it’sdirector, Harald Zwart and uses many of China’s ancient and beautiful landscapes. Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments.
