Very well put. Sequels are far better given time between them, and as you say The Dark Knight is a prime example of this. Making back to back sequels - the last two Matrix films and Pirates films, for example - is also a bad idea. I always felt with those two frachises that there were 3 films to make. But I'd rather they'd have made a top class second film, then waited and had a top class third, than rush them out together.

Sherlock Holmes has clearly been written with sequels in mind - or to leave the possibility open, as with Batman Begins. But it stands up on its own anyway.

Wait a couple of years then bring out a sequel. Iron Man 2 has had time to brew (two years) just about. 3 years is probably a better amount of time, as we had with the Batman films. 4/5 years may be waiting too long.

There's one thing wrong with this article - it assumes they are going to start work on Sherlock Holmes 2 with a blank slate. Given the way the introduced Moriarty as a villain for a possible sequel in the first film, how do we know they didn't already have sequels worked out?

It's obvious there was a desire to turn Sherlock Holmes into a franchise so it may very well have been that plans were in motion for a sequel before the first film was even released.
