***UPDATE: Sony confirm Marc Webb will direct the next Spider-Man Movie. Info below ***

OK, so the chatter has gone wild over the news that Sam Raimi was dumped as director of the Spider-Man franchise with Sony then announcing that they were going to ‘reboot’ the franchise rather than carrying on with where Raimi left off. News this evening comes from NYMag.com who have managed to find out that Sony have not only offered Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) the directing reigns but that they have offered him a three movie deal.

They say: “Sony will imminently announce a deal with “(500) Days of Summer” director Marc Webb to direct not one, but three ‘Spider-Man’ movies in a rebooted franchise that will focus far more on the private life of Peter Parker.”

So, the saga continues but for the time being this is the latest we have. I guess we now wait to see if Webb accepts the deal…. he’s be stupid not to wouldn’t he? Discuss!

*** Update: Webb said, “This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to ‘take over’ from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I’m here because there’s an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man.”  More info on ComingSoon.net.*** Sony Pictures also just put out this tweet as an extra confirmation.
