James Cameron ‘Terminates’ fan request for Autograph

After a gruelling Avatar press tour that covered three out of the four corners of the earth, James Cameron has been caught on camera being welcomed back to the capital of the movie world by more than the usual fanfare of screams, shouts outs and photo requests. This time the visual record shows the side of a fan and director that definitely did not fulfill the festive cheer. Set your bo-peepers on this…

This whole thing reminds me of the time I met Bruce Campbell of ‘Evil Dead’ fame and asked for his autograph. The difference being was that I was forking out hard earned money for his signature at a film convention, hence I was justified in my request as I was paying for the pleasure of a genuine scrawl. What wasn’t justified was that I wanted my full size replica ‘Army of Darkness’ custom made chainsaw, shipped from the USA and carted to Coventry from London via Manchester, signed ”GRROOOVVY’ – Bruce Campbell”. What ensued was Mr. Campbell insisting on signing it, even after protest, frowning, a tentative handshake on his part and much discussion on what colour of pen to use, ”Saw Ya Later! – Bruce Campbell”. The whole thing still provides me with a 15 minute story about the facts of the experience, normally discussed over a strong pint, to this day.

After watching this video, I can identify with a fella who sounds like he had his feelings hurt with not getting the signature he wanted. What I can’t fathom is how he reacted with all the dignity of a scalded five year old. When my request wasn’t honoured, I just smiled at Bruce and vowed to myself that I would never buy one of his movies again without significant protest (mainly voiced to whoever the cashier would be at the time of purchase).

But what do YOU think about this clip? My humble thoughts focus on several facts that mix and match the pomposity of each sides reasoning, follow me on this journey of opinion:

  • JC was walking through a luggage bay pick up door at the time of request (a task that is only accomplished with patience if you are a Zen master, even with help) - BUT he was returning from a global press tour promoting his latest $300 million epic where he had signed a million and one autographs anyway.
  • Signing something takes a flattering two seconds that may mean everything or nothing to a die hard fan or prosperous autograph dealer, both of which would have waited in the cold for hours for the signing opportunity - BUT ‘No’ means ‘No’.
  • When you say to the world media ‘I’ll sign as long as they keep lining up’ that you should ‘nut up or shut up’ - BUT asking for an autograph like someone who expects it just because he has ‘paid his hourly wage to see a movie’ is being ’unfairly expectant’ (I paid to see Avatar and I wouldn’t expect James Cameron to owe me an autograph if we bumped into each other).
This battle could be waged beyond the merits of what the discussion warrants, but your thoughts and comments are eternally invaluable. So I will leave the culmination of my thoughts in the words of my other favourite cyborg Robocop – ‘We Are Only Human’.

Booo. 15 seconds to sign an autograph. I had a pass and did not pay full price to see this movie (only $3 extra for Imax 3D).

But I still want my money back!

you are obviously not a fan in any way from how you bashed the movie. You payed to see it for yourself, not for him. Cameron was totally in the right, you were being a major asshole.

I was pretty angry at James Cameron when I read about him abusing that guy at the airport. I have had a partial change of heart after reading something by John Mayer (sp). I don't know who John Mayer is but he did say some interesting things about how celebrities are treated when they get of airplanes. He talked about how some people will follow the celebrity "barking" at the celebrity for autographs. I think this is true because I was at an airport where I saw a celebrity walking down the hall and somebody was walking beside the celebrity and it looked like the person was pestering the celebrity. Now mind you that the celebrities hands were full, he had just gotten off an airplane and another person is walking besides him bugging him. I can imagine that James Cameron was probably just getting back from a promotion, was very tired, just wanted to get home to catch his breath, and the "fan" was probably shadowing James Cameron and barking at James Cameron for an autograph. I know that in the beginning of the videotape it looks like the fan is being polite but that video starts after the fan and Cameron were already engaged so I do not know how the fan initially approached Cameron or if the fan was coming off as some kind of barking hustler, which I believe may have been the case. Hustler types can't hide their hustle behavior and I can imagine that the "fan" may have come across to Cameron as a hustler type...pushy and not very courteous. So after thinking about it a week I think that there is a real possibility that given that Cameron was tired, just got off a plane, wanted to get home to catch his breath, and some hustler type of person starts being pushy and barking out demands for an autograph, well if I had been in Cameron's shoes it wouldn't have sit well with me so I can imagine it wouldn't sit well with Cameron and so Cameron decided not to be gracious. The fan was probably inconsiderate and hustler-rude and he acted like this at the wrong time because Cameron had just gotten off a plane and just wanted to get home to take a breather from all the Avatar commotion.

I think Cameron is probably getting a raw deal with the negative publicity he's attracted from this situation. I think he should do some kind of online fan-appreciation thing/event to send a signal to us fans that he is with us, and the event at the airport does not reflect his true feelings about fans.

I'm tired of reading posts saying that Mr. Cameron knew that guy was a TMZ reporter or that the guy was going to sell the poster on ebay. I don't know if the guy is a TMZ reporter or if the guy was going to sell the poster at ebay, but even if he is a TMZ reporter or if he was planning to sell the poster on ebay Mr. Cameron had no idea that was the case at the time he abused that man. As far as James Cameron knew that man could have been any regular fan who truly admired James Cameron up till that moment. In fact, If it had been you or me asking for Mr. Cameron’s autograph then Mr. Cameron would have treated us the same as he treated that guy at the airport. Fans have come to expect autographs because celebrities usually give autographs. It goes with the job that celebrities chose. Nobody forces them to be celebrities. It’s part of that business. I myself called Fox to ask them to release memorabilia because I wanted a piece of memorabilia commemorating Avatar for my wall. Not to sell. Fox hasn't returned my calls. I guess their as rude as Cameron. I guess they disdain us fans as much as Cameron disdains us fans. I truly loved the movie, and I was planning to see it numerous times but not anymore. I talk others out of going to see it now because I’m that disgusted with Fox's and Cameron’s disrepectful attitude towards fans. They treat us like rubes and pigeons. We fans are not their serfs. I won’t see the sequels either. Doesn’t it bother you just knowing that they really despise us fans and look down on us. Doesn’t it bother you that if you had asked Cameron for his autograph he would have treated you the same way he treated that guy at the airport? How can we enrich a guy who treats people like you as doormats??? We need to boycot this movie to show Cameron and Fox that we are to be treated with dignity and respect. If Cameron were one of the people in this new movie of his it certainly wouldn't be Jake Sully because Sully cared about the common people. Cameron would be one of the arrogant creeps attacking the common people for sure.
  • It looked to me like the guy held his poster in front of Cameron's face without a word and that's pretty rude. He didn't say, "Can I have an autograph" and then hand over a poster when told he could. Later, he whines about how bad Avatar is and how the story is pathetic. He also whines about how little he earns per hour. Seems to me that he was probably upset that he didn't get a signature on a poster to sell and make some money from. Cameron probably knew it.

the guy most likely just said negative things about the movie because he felt spurned by Cameron. Imagine asking a hot chick for a date and she rejects you and then you say something like "I really didn't want to go out with you anyway." I think that the guy was just hurt by the way Cameron rejected his request for an autograph and he was hurt by the way Cameron insulted him. The guy no doubt admires Cameron because we all do, and he was probably pretty hurt that Cameron selected him to degrade in that manner.

Cameron is a nasty person for sure. If you have any self-respect you will boycot his movie because he clearly disdains you.
