ThorYesterday Natalie Portman let slip that her pal Kat Dennings was joining her in the cast of Thor. Speculation ran rife on the interwebs as to who she was playing, with /Film suggesting a list of possibilities, ranging from rogue Norse goddesses to the younger sister of Portman’s character.

While we would love to see Dennings strapping on armour and fighting against Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, nearly as much as we’d love to see her role around in mud and scrap with Portman, we don’t think it’ll happen. In fact, there may be a far more mundane possibility.

Way back at the beginning of last month Spoiler TV published a casting call for Thor, for the role of “Warriors”:

[WARRIORS] A fearless warrior race, where size, strength and ferocity define a member’s rank in both the social and military hierarchy. Warriors born in this society face the harshest ecological conditions imaginable and thrive in environments where lesser creatures, including humans, quickly perishes. Theirs is a world created to cull weakness from the universe to ensure their supreme sovereignty spreads across the stars. MUST BE 6’2 OR TALLER sptv050769, NO BODYBUILDER TYPES. SAG ROLE BUT NO LINES. MUST BE COMFORTABLE WEARING PROSTHETICS.”

Just over a month later came the announcement that Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano and Stuart Townsend had been cast as the Warriors Three.

On the same day as that casting call was announced, Spoiler TV also announced a casting call for a character called “Marcy Lewis”:

[MARCY LEWIS] (20) Is a college student. Aloof, jaded beyond her years, she thought her internship with scientist Kate Spelling would be an easy 6 college credits. However, she’s been stuck for months in this small New Mexico town and relegated to a wide range of unglamorous activities. Kate has been particularly hard on Marcy, making it her personal project to see that Marcy lives up to her potential. Marcy deals with her situation both by using subtle irony and by being an overt wiseass.“

Pay particular attention to the last sentence, “Marcy deals with her situation both by using subtle irony and by being an overt wiseass.“ ““ Sound anything like the characters Kat Dennings usually plays? We think so.

Supposing we’re right about this, and we think we are, it leads us to the question of who Marcy Lewis and Kate Spelling are? To the best of our knowledge they aren’t regular Marvel U characters, but it seems strange casting Kat Dennings in a minor role.

Could there be a clue in the character description? If she’s a student of science, could it be that she knows Donald Blake (Thor’s human alter ego, who starts out in the comics as a medical student)? Is the New Mexico location relevant? It’s around Bruce Banner’s stomping grounds. Could she provide some sort of connection to the wider Marvel Universe? More to the point, which incredible thespian is Branagh going to cast as Kate Spelling?

As always, fell free to speculate below.
