I love Wilder's performance in this; a bit of both gentle compassion and an almost devilish sense of schadenfreude, when it comes to the bad children.

If they ever made an American version of “Doctor Who,” Wilder surely should have played him.

You know, I didn't actually pull that fact out of my ass, I heard it from someone who was in a position to be taken serious. Now that I do some of my own research however, I find that you are totally correct – the name was chanhed for reasons of wartime propaganda… To think I've spent all this time resenting Gene Wilder for being a jerk…

They were obligated to change the title because Charlie stood for a racist slang for Vietnamese. This film came out right in the midst of the Vietnam war, that had nothing to do with Gene Wilder.

Self-indulgent? Playing an eccentric, candy obsessed factory owner would be enough to tempt anyone to indulge. He looks like he's having a ball in this film.

Mike Judge was one of my favourite creators when I was a teen. I remember seeing Beavis and Butthead Do America in the cinemas, months before the TV show had hit Australia. I loved those degenerate teenagers, who were a mix of pure id and pure stupidit…

This is still my favorite Wonka flick. Even without the CGI and glossy effects of the modern version, the candy/chocolate still made me salivate!

Could this be Gene Wilder's most self-indulgent performance? I think the fact that they were contractually obligated to change the title of the film from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory would be good indication.

Have you ever wondered exactly where this movie actually takes place? I mean, it looks by all rational consideration to be an English town of some kind… maybe Wessex? That's a British town, right? The accents are everywhere, giving the film an placeless/timeless quality.

This is undoubtedly a classic, and head and shoulders above Tim Burton's version… even if Burton's does cover the glass elevator and is more self aware of some of the story's absurditities… like pre-written songs for misbehaving children. If he knew they were wankers, why invite them in the first place? Just to mess with them?
