Safety Not Guaranteed is by far one of my favourite films of the year. I fell in love with it at Sundance London back in April (you can read our five-star review of the film here), and have been looking forward to seeing it again ever since.
Starring Aubrey Plaza in the lead opposite Mark Duplass, the film is a fantastic comedy with so much heart, and it opened strong in its limited release in four cities in the US at the weekend – taking just shy of $100,000 in nine theatres is very impressive, especially for an indie like this.
The film’s YouTube channel has uploaded two great new clips, entitled Your Mission and I Like Your Intensity, giving us a taste of both the heart and the comedy the film has to offer: trust me, it has both in spades.
“From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine – When an unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it, they discover a mysterious eccentric named Kenneth, a likable but paranoid supermarket clerk, who believes hes solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon. Together, they embark on a hilarious, smart, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey that reveals how far believing can take you.”
Colin Trevorrow makes a fantastic feature directorial debut, with a script from newcomer Derek Connolly, and a great supporting cast in the form of Jake M. Johnson (New Girl), Karan Soni, Mary Lynn Rajskub (24), and Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm).
Here in the UK, we’re still without a release date, but I’m hoping that having found such a great reception in its opening weekend, both critically and commercially, we’ll have a release date a little later this year on our shores.
Safety Not Guaranteed will be opening wider in cities across the US this Friday, and further still next Friday, and if you’re reading this across the Atlantic, I strongly recommend you click here to find your nearest theatre screening the film.
