Top 10 Oscar Contenders to Watch This Year

9: Les Miserables (UK release, 11th January 2013)

Another well-timed release, with a roster of Academy friends to vote for including The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper, the Oscar-winning Russell Crowe and the Oscar-nominated Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham-Carter.

Musicals have struggled to prevail in recent years, but like Chicago in 2003 it is also adapted from a classic stage musical and may feature in the Best Picture and acting categories, but I expect its main challenge to be in costume, makeup, art direction, and score.

I think The Amazing Spider-Man has a very real chance of at least being nominated in the Best Original Score category for James Horner.
He has one win and eight other nominations in the category, and the score is genuinely amazing, very much living up to the film’s title.
I think he and Hans Zimmer are all but guarantees, and quite possibly James Newton Howard for Snow White and the Huntsman.

Ah, I haven’t heard the Spider-Man score, so that’s interesting. I would add John Williams to that list too. Could be a tough category to call.

I think The Hunger Games should be nominated over The Avengers or The Amazing Spiderman, personally.

I don’t think Spider Man and Brave will make the list, and if Dark Knight Rises and Avengers get nominated, they will not win. I think the Great Gatsby and the Hobbit will be the two big dogs fighting with surprise wins possible for Django and any independent film that can find it’s way onto the Oscars radar

I’m perfectly fine with TDKR being nominated an losing. I just want it to be nominated. Also, The Hunger Games should get nominated. It was truly one of the best films this year.
